Basset Hounds With Noses to the Ground

It was the Summer of 2006. After returning from work one afternoon, I was expecting a loud and excited greeting from my two basset hounds, Lucy and Haley. Lucy suffers from glaucoma. Because of it, she has one prosthetic eye and can't see well from the other. I walked in the front door...and nothing. Silence. I called for them, thinking perhaps they were in the backyard and didn't hear me come in. Nothing out back. I went to the bedroom. Bassets are known to sleep a lot. Maybe they were napping. I walked into the bedroom and looked out the window. My heart stopped. The fence was open. They were gone! I started to panic.

I immediately ran out front and started calling (more like screaming) their names. I knew that being basset hounds, they could be anywhere. Who knew how long it had been since they got out? They would just put their noses to the ground, as they are bred to do, and go. I thought I would never see them again. I live on a busy street, so my worst fear was that one or both of them would get hit by a car.

They were both rescue dogs, but only Lucy was chipped. I never got around to chipping Haley. She had a bad heart and I didn't know how long she would be alive. It didn't even dawn on me that Lucy had the chip. I ran in the house to call someone, anyone...

It was then that I noticed the message light blinking on my answering machine. The message said that someone found Lucy and I should call HomeAgain to get the contact number. I followed the instructions and to my relief, I soon found out that the Bassets had stayed together in their trek. They were safe on someone's patio about a half mile away.

Haley died not too long ago from congenital heart failure. I miss her immensely. Lucy is still kicking, even though her eyesight worse than ever. Two weeks ago I rescued another Basset - Fred. The very first thing I did was have him neutered and chipped. I know how Bassets love to follow their noses. This time, there is a lock on the gate!
