A year back, I used to live with some friends about 8 miles from my parents house. At this house, we had a dog with an incredibly hilarious personality. We had friends over all the time. He loved the excitement of the college life and we all loved him. When it came time to move out, I had a friend watch him for a few days so he wouldn't get out while we moved out all of our stuff. An open door was always an invitation to him :) The people who had him lived about 10-15 miles south of the house we were all moving out of. Zye must have sensed the move beforehand or maybe just didn't like who was watching him so he decided he would go "home" on his own accord and went under the fence like a pro, even getting his collar off. I was informed that he was missing and then I drove around sobbing and calling his name, checking the backyard of the old house religiously. I just knew he would come back there. He always had an excellent sense of location. Three weeks passed and it was now Thanksgiving. It turned out to be a depressing holiday without my companion. The next week my college classes resumed and between two of my classes with an hour to pass, I went yet again to the local animal shelter (as I had been doing for weeks). This time they had me go through a book of call-in reports of found dogs that have been fostered by individuals and families. One caught my eye by location and description. I frantically called the family and all of my verbal descriptions checked out. They let me come out and look right away. I was shocked by who greeted me at the door!!! There he was, tail a wagging. I couldn't believe it. They came outside and brought him out to me and he jumped up to greet me excitedly and then ran right over to my car parked in their driveway. "Lets go home Dad!" I couldn't have been happier. Needless to say I skipped class that day because I found my buddy! The amazing part is that they lived about two blocks from my old house where he approached them cautiously. He crossed over two highways and ran 10-15 miles back to our old house! He had not been micro-chipped and this event promptly inspired me to do so. If I had had HomeAgain as I do now, I would have been reunited much faster. Nonetheless I thank my lucky stars for finding him and that family for taking such good care of him. They had even boarded him when they were gone the prior week for Thanksgiving! He may not have gone cross country like Shadow, Chance, and Sassy in "Homeward Bound" but he is right up there with them in my book!
