On New Year’s Eve morning, Dec 31, 2008, I received a call from our towns Animal Control Officer. She stated that our male Beagle “Cal” had been found wandering the streets 2 weeks prior, during the horrible ice storm that had hit our area. She brought him to the police station and scanned him and traced him back to us.
What is so special about this story, you ask? Well, Cal ran away from our home 2 ½ YEARS (not weeks) ago! Let me let you in on the details…
We moved to our town over 3 years ago, 6 months or so after, Cal was out in the yard playing with my husband and our miniature pinscher. All of a sudden, like a flash, he just took off running out of our yard. We searched frantically for him…hours turned into days, weeks, then months. We stressed every resource we could think of. My husband and I came to the realization that we may never see him again. All we could hope is that nothing horrible happened to him because we live in a rural area, where there is a lot of woods and wide open spaces. When we would drive around town, I always kept my eyes out the window thinking maybe I would spot him one day. Time went on, we had 2 children, and every so often we would talk about Cal and what ever happened to him.
When I received that call, I just could not believe my ears! My husband rushed out to pick him up. I was waiting anxiously by the window for my husbands truck to pull in with Cal. He was the same old boy he had always been, just a few pounds heavier and a couple of years older. Cal has been home for about a week, he is responding to his name and seems to be adjusting quite nicely. We did not have kids when Cal left, now we have 2, he is so gentle with them! Our 2 ½ year old son proclaims his love for Cal constantly.
I have no answers as to why whomever had him all that time before never reported him, or brought him to a shelter or police station to be scanned. They must have just fallen in love with him or simply did not think to have him scanned. But, what’s done is done, and my family is just so happy to have him back. We could not have asked for a better New Year’s gift.
Having the HomeAgain micro chip is the best thing you can do for the safety of your pets. If Cal did not have it, we truly would have never seen him again.
Always keep your furry babies close by, and if they happen to slip past your watchful eye…never give up hope and simply, just never give up.
